Break the Bonds – New York State

Here in New York State, we don’t have to look far for a connection to the bombs Israel is dropping in Palestine. The New York State pension fund is one of the top US investors in Israel Bonds, which provide unrestricted funds for the Israeli government and military.

Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York State are calling on workers, retirees, taxpayers, and every New Yorker to join our statewide campaign to end the purchase of Israel Bonds using our taxes and retirement funds. Together, we can demand that New York stop investing in Israeli apartheid and genocide.

Truth and Justice For Palestine

Truth & Justice For Palestine Coalition (TJ4P) began looking at the way WAMC’s The Roundtable covered current events, and why. They found that the show featured US and Israeli military affiliated experts 103 times, that 77% of the panels exclusively featured white guests, and that there were tiny percentages of Black, brown, queer, Muslim, Palestinian and disabled panelists.

The Coalition for Truth and Justice for Palestine is calling on WAMC to commit to consistent inclusion of Palestinian and anti-genocide voices — to live up to its mission of representing the whole community.

Housing Justice For All

In 2022, we joined the Housing Justice For All coalition. Housing Justice for All is a statewide movement of tenants and homeless New Yorkers united in our fight for housing as a human right.

Housing is a basic human right, but too many New Yorkers live without safe and decent homes. Thanks to a system that favors the real estate lobby and big corporate landlords over tenants and homeless New Yorkers, we are facing a historic housing crisis.

But tenants and homeless New Yorkers aren’t going to wait for the real estate industry to solve the crisis. We’ve come together to fight for solutions that get us out of this crisis right now, while sowing the seeds for a new housing system that finally puts people over profits.

Public Power New York

In 2021, we joined the Public Power New York coalition. Public Power NY is a statewide, grassroots movement of New Yorkers who know the truth about our energy system: that to build a future we can be proud of, we must take our power back from corporate control, and put it in the hands of the people.

To make it happen, they passed the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA), the biggest climate and green jobs bill in the nation. The BPRA unleashed the power of New York State to build publicly owned, 100% renewable energy, create a new era of green union jobs, slash rising energy bills for those who need it most, and make New York a national leader in the fight to build a future we’d be proud to pass on to those to come. Now they are fighting to make sure our full vision for a Green New Deal in New York becomes a reality.

The movement is made up of over 20 of New York’s most effective climate, community, and advocacy organizations, and thousands of volunteers who have taken action everywhere from Brooklyn to Buffalo. The campaign is also endorsed by labor unions representing over one million members in New York, including 1199SEIU, NYSUT, UUP, PSC-CUNY, and UAW 9A.

Campaign for New York Health

The Campaign for New York Health is a coalition of organizations, unions, businesses and individuals committed to guaranteeing healthcare for every New Yorker by passing universal healthcare in New York State.

The New York Health Act (NYHA) is the only bill currently in the New York state legislature that would guarantee comprehensive, high quality healthcare for every New Yorker — no exceptions.

Ranked Choice Voting Albany

RCV Albany is a grassroots, nonpartisan movement trying to bring a better and more representative way of voting to the city of Albany. They are an inclusive group with diverse viewpoints and identities that have come together across difference to make our city a better place.

Despite being the capital of New York state, Albany consistently sees low turnout and voter engagement, with uncompetitive general elections and the potential for vote splitting in more competitive primaries.

Ranked Choice Voting would give us all more voice in city elections. Discover how it can make our elections fairer, more inclusive, and representative of our diverse community. It’s a better way to vote that lets everyone vote for their favorite candidate while still having a backup choice, and it incentivizes candidates to speak to the needs of the entire community.
